A Review of the women’s Race
When you analyze the women’s race based on the field in the women line – up, you would have easily come to the conclusion that two of the women could have won the race or had the ability at present to prevail over the lot.
Angela Parris of CLICO – the 2008 winner had a chance or Crystal Ann Awai of GHL
who showed early form in the this year’s CariFin Urban Challenge could do it.Early Showings
Crystal Ann Awia surprised everyone and won the one Lap savannah, with Parris in tow for second place.
Then faded to a mysteriously to fourth place in the Green Mile due to an ailment, Parris followed in fifth place.
Awia bounced back in the Chancellor Challenge to top the women, Parris was fourth is this event.
Success!
But in the end Awia ran away with the CariFin – Women Cross Country race at Sevilla Golf Course – Couva on Sunday May 31, 2009.
Parris ran a good race to hold off Mumtaz Amarali of Republic Bank – The 2009 Aerobics Burnout champion and definitely someone who have been getting stronger and stronger in the running department.
Candace Rollocks of GHL one of the debutants in this race and who took fourth place and showed a lot of character, determination and promise in how she handled the Sevilla undulating Course…. Possibly someone to watch for next year’s events.
Walking & Running
Tywang – Maharaj and Falomi Marcano had a very interesting race to the finish to settle their positions in the race.
The Numbers Game
This year race had 7 more runners than last year who took to the starting line making it a bit more competitive.
But out of last year’s participants only 7 made it back to this year race. But what is most important here is that five new runners who took part in this year event, which included the winner crystal Ann Awia, the fourth and sixth place finishers among them Candace Rollocks and Falomi Marcano respectively.
Overall RBTT Bank had seven participants in the race giving them the most participant’s status.
Winning Team
CLICO missed out on the winning team prize (top 5 finishers aggregate time) by a very narrow margin being edged out by RBTT Bank who threw every thing they had to take the female winning team trophy to the Park Street.
It’s always good to analyze an event like this as it allows you to look at some participants who would have not normally picked up normal reporting.
The Debutants
Crystal Ann Awia came from a GHL training program that encouraged all the interested runners to come together and train for this event. This obviously had the kind of success intended and saw by the results in CariFin 2009.
Candace Rollock is part of the GHL training team and took part in the Urban Challenge last year and is the most improved runner for 2009.
She came to Sevilla and showed what consistency and determination could produce by finishing fourth behind Mumtaz Amarali
Falomi Marcano of first Citizens took part in the fun run at Sevilla golf course in 2008 but graduated to the full women cross country this year.
She took part in CariFin training for UWI International half marathon and eventually did UWI with us. It was a welcome sign to see she remain active and competitive and showed up at Sevilla. She did all the pre – Sevilla events so was well primed for this event.
Rahoni Mungroo also of RBTT has participated in RBTT 5 K for about 3 times over the last 9 years. She participated in the CariFin Urban Challenge in 2008 but took the full plunge in women 2 lap cross country this year.
