Brief Banter
I had quite a good training run with some of the most elite local runners last Sunday. The group leader – Richard Jones told me before the run that, “This is a half marathon time trial that they were going to going out at a 7 minute per mile pace.”
They were going to start by Macarepe beach head out to the main road, turn right and proceed down to by the army base and back.
Among the group was Nikosi Mc Leish 2008 CariFin champion and Rodney Julien a former 2nd place finisher at CariFin and Urban Challenge Champion for the year 2007. The group had 7 runners, I must say it was a good run, when the main group was at the main road out of Macarepe I was already 300 meters back…… on the main road I started to see the main bunch which was good….. Mc Leish turn back at the 10th mile we cross paths as I was going down… I stopped at the Crew’s Inn and looped back along the course. I was rather surprise when I re-entered the road leading to Macarepe beach I saw Nikosi in the distance, I was in full stride must have gained on him a bit. But I know it didn’t matter to him as he maybe just slowed a bit as he was finishing. Nikosi finished in 1.11 for his 10 miles or there about and I would have done 1.21 for the 10 miler.
The best idea or feelings for me is the fact that I was able to look at various kind of techniques from an elite group, it’s different from watching Jones run around the Savannah on an evening. Here you are able to match stride with guys, watch there turn over or cadence, see how they carry their upper bodies. So the experience is one of learning in a dynamic way and there is the extra energy of the group to feed off.
It was a well enjoyed and welcome run. In all we are seeing how we can improve of times and race efficiencies for a better UWI half marathon run… Looking forward for my next run with Jones and his team soon.
Half marathon tip of the week:
Get a Goal! Make the three or four month commitment. Bob Glover suggests three goals - Acceptable, Challenging, Ultimate - as being more realistic.
Quote of the week:
"Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired."
- George S. Patton, U.S. Army General, 1912 Olympian

Why I love to run UWI Half
The organizing committee for CariFin would like to thank the attendees of the recently held – CariFin Team in training for UWI half marathon – Meet Up and Prize Distribution.
This event took place on Friday January 16, 2008 at 6:10 p.m. at the third floor facilities – Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. The winners came out as well as the other participants in this well attended event.
The much anticipated Prize Distribution saw Dr. Shelton Nicholls and Ms.
Joan John, Deputy Governors on the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago on hand to assist with distribution of the prizes. All participants got pictures of themselves as they passed the finish line on race day.
This was followed by a slide show of all the participants and the video highlights of 2008 and topped off with refreshments and an interlude of music, as people mixed and mingled in true friendship, fun and fitness style.
