CariFin/Nature Valley Personality of the Month of May – 2009.
We are please to highlight people within the financial community who have taken personal responsibility for their health and fitness.
So we present Steve Samuel of RBTT Bank
The first time I got to notice
Jade Camping it was last year – 2008 at the CariFin
Urban Challenge - One Lap Savannah when I heard a burst of excitement at the
finish line only to notice
Jade overtaking another runner on the edge of the finish line.
The question
what does that tells you about Jade. But from what I notice of Jade, he upbeat,
outgoing, love challenges, like to take it down to the wire, love to explore the world.

Jade participated in CariFin 2008, then kept training and went on to do other road races,
the UWI half and CLICO marathon included.
He is back in the fray and is training quite consistently and regular. I am really glad to get
behind the scene and find out what make people tick, what keep them motivated, what are
their personalities and thus shed some light as how normal, even average staff keeps and
maintain their level of fitness.
I think Jade is a very good prospect for our Personality of the Month and I am please to
share this interview.
I emailed these questions to Jade and he answered and e-mail it back to me.
CariFin E-news: What is your training regimen like? How often, regular per week do you workout?
Jade Campings: I do full body resistance training 3 days a week. I also do 4 days of cardio/ running which is generally split up with speed training on Sat morn, a distance run on Sun morning and ‘CariFin’ training on Mon and Wed evenings.
How long have you been exercising?
JC: I’ve been active for as long as I know myself. I love the outdoors and use every opportunity to participate in any activity that has me up and moving, especially football, hiking, cricket. I’ve been involved in a more structured fitness training (running) for 2.5 yrs now.
What kind of exercise do you do for exercise?
JC: Running, resistance training, football, scuba diving, hiking.
You did 1.59 for the UWI half marathon, 4.24 for CLICO marathon and 17.50 for the one Lap Savannah what does that say about Jade?JC: I’m inspired by a challenge, running was never a strong point for me but I recently developed a joy for it. I’m prepared to put in the hard work, to keep pushing myself to improve. I want to win, and I will win even if the battle is with me.
Jade I have found that you enjoy maintain a fitness regimen but that don’t stop you from socializing, hanging with your friends, having the occasional beer. You seem to maintain a balance. You are very approachable and easy to get along with… What is your philosophy here?
JC: To enjoy life responsibly and I know this is cliché but “everything in moderation”
Would you describe yourself as a fun person?
JC: Definitely, what joy can life be without it.
We are seeing a stronger team coming
out for CariFin 2009, some where close to 60…..
Last year you all took the lion’s share at the Urban Challenge…… are you all
looking to repeat?
JC: We here at GHL take our tag line seriously – strength…endurance…leadership. Our wellness programme, Life Pulse, also has a tag that says ‘healthy minds…healthy bodies…healthy lives! As the old saying goes charity begins at home, we can’t preach this unless we are doing it ourselves. We have a passionate bunch who are dedicated to healthy, fit bodies and CariFin presents an excellent avenue for expressing how we feel. Guaranteed, we will be there in full.
More importantly you seem to be in a more structured training program and you seem more committed and focus on improving your performance… What can we expect from you? Or what do you hope to achieve in CariFin 2009.
JC: I strongly believe if you are not willing to give something your best shot it’s better to not do anything at all. Excelling at sport is not about going out there and doing the same thing over and over, I’ve also been doing a lot of reading and understanding the science behind sport makes a difference. You can expect a fitter, faster, stronger Jade.
Jade a number of persons in the financial services sector should be doing something about their level of fitness because it could be having a very serious effect on their health in the long run… as a person on the ground involve in day to day personal activities to increase your fitness…………. What advice would you offer them?
JC: Set small reachable goals first. Once you achieve these targets, you’ll get a boost of confidence to prepare you for your next step. Like running a marathon, you mentally break up the race in manageable pieces, making it easier to ‘digest’.
Name two things you would you like to see improved in CariFin?
JC: More pre-event hype.
Some fitness/ nutrition seminars in the lead up.
Shastri Norman Girwar - PROFILE
As part of our CariFin Personality of the Month series – CariFin is please to present the story of Mr. Shastri Norman Girwar. This is the kind of story that we like to refer to, where the individual not only starts to take responsibility for his own personal health and fitness but is committed, motivated, disciplined and focused. It took the news or information from his doctor to propel Norman on the road to fitness. Once there, he never stopped, he kept moving and had been moving ever since.
We will like to present the Shastri Norman Girwar story in his on words.
Name - Shastri Norman Girwar
Age - 49 years
Employment - Republic Bank
At age 38 on the advice of my physician to lower my Hypertension and Cholesterol level, I started exercising by walking on mornings and evenings. I changed my lifestyle and started yoga and hiking. From walking I started competing in 5 and 10K’s, I have participated in CARIFIN for the past 10 years. My first half marathon was the OWTU 20K from San Fernando to Fyzabad.
It was in 2002 that I challenged myself and entered into the CLICO Marathon (26.2 miles) together with 10 other entrants. Since then I have completed 6 CLICO marathons, 2 UWI half marathons, 2 walks from P.O.S. to Arima and 8 OWTU half marathons.
Some years CARIFIN and the Point Fortin Marathon would clash. So I went to Point in the morning and then to CARIFIN in the afternoon. I recall 2 years ago I went hiking to Mt. El Tucuche and on my return I entered the CARIFIN Cross Country competition, because all the other events were completed.
personality
I was a Republic Bank team member for the B.G. Energy Challenge in 2004. I have accumulated over 40 medals. Over the years I have made a lot of friends from all walks of life throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
In 2006 I was invited to Hillview College, to be honoured for my active participation in athletic competitions and to act as an incentive for a healthy and active lifestyle to the students of the college.
At this stage of my life I enjoy difficult hikes like Matelot to Blanchisseuse, El Tucuche and Paria. I also enjoy full and half marathons. Believing in oneself and competing the events is important. I continue with walking daily, sometimes once or twice a day as it keeps my health in good order. I hope one day to enter the Boston marathon and London marathon
CariFin Personality of the Month
Because hard work should not go unrecognized CariFin Committee has come up with the Personality of the Month. The CariFin Personality of the month programme started in February and will run six months. The idea is to showcase people who exercise at least three times a week, and of course we would be looking for a personal interest story. All participants in the CariFin Personality of the Month would be posted on Fun, Fitness and Friendship blog (http://funfitnessfriendship.vox.com) and will be featured on our CariFin e- newsletter.
We are asking institutions to suggest or submit persons who exercise three times per week, be it walking, cycling, running, working out in the gym, swimming etc. I am looking for four persons to highlight per month. The decision about who to highlight will be taken by readers and me (until we could get volunteers to assist). If you want to vote for the CariFin Personality of the Month, please email your vote to me.
Each of the four persons whose story we publish will win a hamper and a CariFin Personality of the Month certificate. The overall winner also gets a trophy and gets a chance to star in a five minute video, based on an interview. The five minutes video would be feature on Fun, Fitness and Friendship blog, as well as Youtube and all the leading video sites.
The first entrants into the CariFin Personality of the Month Programme are Wendy D’arbaise (CBTT) and Karen Dowden (RBTT Bank). Wendy D’arbasie emerges as the more compelling story that lends credence to living the CariFin way in their personal life.
Once again we would like to congratulate Wendy D’arbasie of CBTT and Karen Downer of RBTT Bank for being part of CariFin Personality of the month. We would like mangers to suggest likely people that we can use for the CariFin Personality of the Month as well as looking for suggestions to make it a more interesting and effective programme.
