Mumtaz ends CariFin Urban Challenge with a win!
The CariFin Aerobic Burnout took place on Wednesday May 13, 2009 at the Central Bank Plaza, Independence Square, Port of Spain at 6.00 p.m. This was the last of four events that compose the CariFin Urban Challenge. The Urban Challenge is a precursor to the CariFin Cross Country, which is held at the undulating Sevilla Golf Course, Couva.
The field of approximately 100 participants had the normal tranquil evening air of the Central Bank Plaza transform to a sporting arena, where the question of the fittest persons in the financial sector would be settled. Competitors tried their best to keep in time with the music while remaining in sync with the instructors. Some of the runners adapted quite well in this aerobic role, while some encountered set backs.
The event started slowly, competitors were allowed to thoroughly enjoy the warm-up and the music. Smiles and friendly gestures were noticeable all around, but that quickly evaporated when the whistle was blown and the tempo of the music and the pace of the routine increased, it was every man or woman for themselves. In some extreme cases it was laughter all the way until the red paddle was staring participants in the face beckoning them to come off the battle ground.
Eventually, the face-off for the title of CariFin Aerobic Champion for 2009 was between Mumtaz Amarali of Republic Bank Limited and Angela Parris of CLICO. The persistent and confident Mumtaz Amarali was in no way daunted by her 3rd place results in the other three (3) parts of the Urban Challenge. As if saving the best for last Amarali timed her performance to perfection, smartly pacing herself through the early stages of the competition to unleash that energy, power and finesse that she has now become famous. She definitely enjoyed the sweet song of the “fat lady sings” for the Aerobics Burnout as she delighted both the judges and crowd at the end with her third win, her collection of first place trophies in the Aerobic Burnout started in 2006, then in 2007.
Angela Parris of CLICO, a past winner herself copped 2nd place, while Falomi Marcano of First Citizen’s Bank Limited placed third. Natasha Bartholomew – Republic Bank Limited and Kathleen Montoute-Remy of CLICO also performed creditably. Among the men Gilford Mornix was the top performer.

In the end every participant is worthy of congratulations for participating. We look forward to seeing you at Sevilla.
