In this issue of the CariFin e-newsletter we have the distinct honor of having the editorial done by Ms. Catherine Kumar President and Country Head RBTT BANK LIMITED to share with you.
In these challenging and stressful times, health and wellness are more important than ever. In this context, I would like to thank and congratulate CariFin for eighteen years of activities promoting healthy and balanced lifestyles within the financial sector.
As always, CariFin’s agenda for 2009 is ambitious and exciting, including cross-country events, a Family Day, cricket and football, the RBTT 5K and much more. These activities offer us opportunities to build new friendships through sport, while benefiting individually.
Of course we will only benefit if we participate! As individuals, each of us must take personal responsibility for our physical and mental health, and the CariFin programme is an excellent way to kick-start your own personal wellness programme. If you are already involved, then this is the time to measure your progress and set new personal benchmarks.
Carifin is also a wonderful way to interact outside of the work environment with colleagues from other financial institutions. The friendly competitive spirit that permeates CariFin is unique in that it brings us closer together, building team skills and camaraderie within our organisations and within the industry as a whole.
In this vein, I would like to make a clarion call for senior managers in the industry to become much more involved in CariFin’s activities. Don’t just encourage your staff to participate! Rather, advertise your own personal commitment to wellness by getting personally involved in CariFin events. This programme offers something for everyone, at every level of fitness, so there’s no excuse for sitting on the sidelines!
Let me use a few banking terms here: The bottom line is that CariFin pays immense dividends and offers a great return on your investment! For those individuals and organisations who really get involved, the payoff is a greater sense of pride, belonging, and achievement. What’s more, CariFin’s support for the Lupus Society of Trinidad and Tobago means that we can all get involved in “Fun, Fitness & Friendship” for a good cause!
I would close with these few words of wisdom:
“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.

CariFin Weekend Round - Up
The Torch Run will take the headline position this weekend as CariFin seeks to herald the start of a very tight, well managed, excitement filled, team building series of events filled with intense activity and fun for everyone - CariFin Urban Challenge, Cricket, Football and All Fours cumulating with the must attend 18th Edition- CariFin Cross Country and Family Day.
The hand over legs are designated, the teams have been selected, the Gatorade van is standing by, together with the police, ambulance and Team REACT. The P.A. system is tested and the torch is waiting to be lit.
Come Saturday March 28, 2009 at 7.00 a.m. the Central Bank senior management, led by Dr. Nicholls, will welcome and lead a contingent of members of the financial services sector on the first leg of the torch Run from St. Vincent Street, along the main road to South Quay, to the Central Market, then along the Eastern Main Road to the Coconut Growers Association.
Also assisting in sending the Torch off is Ms. Catherine Kumar President and Country Head of RBTT Bank, Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Nigel Baptiste Executive Director of Republic Bank Limited, Junior Frederick General Manager of DIC and Lisa Mahabir Marketing Manager of Grace Kennedy Trinidad Limited.
Let the symbol that the Torch represents be bigger, let’s add a bit of fanfare, let's add some more purpose… the Torch Run has a very emotional touch to it and it is only wise that we recognize that and turn up in our numbers either to send off the torch or to join in supporting it along the way via vehicle, bicycle or using your legs.
The Torch Run seeks to inspire and encourage greater awareness among individuals and institutions about their role and responsibility in promoting better health and wellness and to better foster greater camaraderie and closer ties and friendship among people in the financial services sector. Hence our watch words – “Fun, Fitness and Friendship.”
It's about igniting the passion, sharing the vision and going the distance…..
The rest of the route proceeds from Morvant Junction, through the Croissee to Mt. Lambert, then to the Curepe Junction, along the old Southern Main Road to Kaydonna,. The route then follows through Caroni, to Cunupia, Enterprise, Chaguanas, Chase Village, St. Mary’s, Mc Bean and concludes at Republic Bank Limited, Couva.
Central Bank’s team is very ambitious in snapping up four (4) of the fourteen legs, this is a first for them, as they venture to share the work load of the approximately nine hour journey to take torch to it destination at Republic Bank Couva.
Republic Bank Limited took four (4) legs also, always playing a big part in this event as strong contingent is always on hand to show support and carry the Torch on its way to its final destination in Couva.
Not to be outdone by central Bank or Republic Bank, First Citizens took four (4) legs as well as they too are playing their part in getting the Torch to its destination. This too is a first that First Citizens has taken this many legs in the Torch Run.
Grace Kennedy Trinidad Limited takes the second leg, they have always been a part of the Torch Run for the last three (3) years and lend a very valuable hand in getting the Torch to Couva.
First timers to the Torch Run – Intercommercial Bank Limited has not let the opportunity of the Torch passing in-front of their bank go without making sure they have a moment in time to showcase their energy, enthusiasm and passion. It's left for us to see what they can come up with now that they have this opportunity.
Friends of CariFin is the next group to join the Torch Run, made up of participants in our CariFin UWI team they have come out to lend a hand. Not taking any chances just in case any of the legs falter they would be there to lend a helping hand.
This is the final call to every to come out and support the Torch. Either show up to sent it off or drive, ride or run or walk. If you can’t make it to the start but live along the way then come out in your community and support.
