Know the warning signs of heat stroke
Heatstroke is a sudden uncontrolled rise in body temperature that affects the brain so that it can’t function properly. It should never happen to you because you get plenty of warning.
First your muscles are affected, then your circulation and then your brain. As your temperature starts to rise, your muscles feel like a hot poker is pressing against them. As it rises further, the air that you breathe feels like it’s coming from a furnace and no matter how rapidly and deeply you try to breathe, you won’t be able to get enough air.
CARIFIN IS WE THING
Not everything I hear resonates and lingers in my mind. But on some special occasions it does happen. One of those times was when I was interviewing Hazel Tywang-Maharaj of RBTT Bank for the CariFin personality of the Month series. There is something which she said that hit the “spot” - CariFin is we thing
CARIFIN IS WE THING

REVIEW OF RBTT BANK 5K
We can describe RBTT 5K 2207 as a spectacular event for a number of reasons.
Let’s begin with the number of participants – there were 700 staff, spouses and children which made this a phenomenal institution event.
Then there were the repeat winning performances by last years’ male and female champions. Nikosi Mc Leish showed confidence and spirit, dominated the race from the midway point and pushed ahead to lower the course record a second time to 18:45.
Susan Russell was the unchallenged female winner and cruised to the tape in a time of 25:26, close to last year’s time.
Another spectacular fact was the participation by two incredible women who are leaders in their profession: Catherine
Kumar, RBTT Managing Director RBTT Bank Ltd., and the Honorable Hazel Manning, Minister of Education who successfully completed the course. And not to be outdone were the senior RBTT managers who performed well – there were the likes of Hazel Tywang-Maharaj, Manager – Personal Banking who finished 2nd overall; Karen Dowden – Procurement Manager, Robert da Silva – General Manager, Personal and Commercial Banking who was 4th overall in a time of 21:13 and top of his age group and Leroy Calliste, Group Financial Comptroller who completed the course in 23:27 and who also topped his age group.
And then, there was the tangible fun and camaraderie in the buzz around RBTT Chaguaramas. This was one of those events that had that nice
friendly, family kind of touch to it. People all over the compound looked so happy to be there, meeting and greeting each other with hugs, kisses and the occasional hand-shake.
Participants at all levels of fitness, sizes and weight didn’t shy away. They disregarded conventional wisdom and ole talk that said that running and walking are for people of a certain size, and they either walked, ran, chipped or pushed a pram as they earned points for their team and helped make this race an RBTT success.
Congratulations must go to race director Clem Jubrajsingh, the RBTT Corporate Communications crew and the support staff, who did an excellent job. They made sure all was in place from Security and CDA staff, the running vests, to the music (which started since 6:40 a.m.), the water stops, Gatorade, the hot corn soup and doubles galore.
In the end, the race was truly about fun, friendships and fitness.
Susan didn’t disappoint at RBTT 5K
Susan Russell won the women category of RBTT BANK 5K in 2006, and many of us were wondering - could she do it again in 2007?
After winning the race in 2006, the pressure was on for a repeat performance in 2007. She took the pressure with style, elegance and grace and like a true champion, she went out and did what the team required of her – she won the race.
The warm early morning sun tried to defy her, bearing down on as she covered the 3.1 miles course. However, this runner seemed unfazed as she focused on maintaining a comfortable lead to cruise past the finish line in 25.26. Susan led from the gun to the tape in emphatic style, leaving the competition behind.
The race went according to plan - she was the unchallenged favorite, go out fast with the leading men, stay with them at least for the first 800m, maintain a pace from there, and make contenders work to shorten her lead. This game plan by Abdul, was well advised since the other female runners had a difficult task – they would have needed the stamina and confidence to catch up with her after 2 km.
Insights!
From RBTT BANK 5K
Its nice to read what a writer thinks and how he interpret what he sees at an event such as the RBTT BANK 5 K, but also to give a keener insight and make for more interesting reporting we are presenting some short video clips that say exactly how some key participants felt after the race.
Catherine Kumar - Managing Director RBTT BANK
Catherine Kumar –is really a people person, easy to get along with and very out going, a former inspector of bank at Central Bank now the Managing Director of RBTT BANK. And she had the conditioning to participate and found the time to be with her people today… which we at CariFin think is huge in terms of leadership and giving support to the idea of personal responsibility of individual fitness.
Nikosi Mc Leish the record breaking champion of RBTT BANK 5K did a time of 18.52. We think it is interesting to bring to you his comments, his feelings about his winning performance as carried here on the number one voice for sports and fitness in the financial services sector - the CariFin blog
Hazel Tywang-Maharaj took second place at RBTT BANK 5K race and is our March – CariFin Personality of the Month winner, and a huge fan of CariFin and our current walking champion.
Get close up and personal with her and listen to insights… her feelings about her RBTT 5K performance and what event she will do next…. All on the CariFin blog

Nikosi breaks RBTT 5K record a second time – new record of 18.52.45
It didn’t take Nikosi Mc Leish long to stamp his authority on RBTT’s 5K.
After just (8) minutes into the race, he realized that no competition was in the offering and built an indelible lead. He turned on the heat on an already sunny May morning, and never looked back as he demolished his old course record of 19.18 to a new time of 18.52.45 – his pace was 6.04 per mile.
The possible challenge from one-time winner Noel Nero, failed to materialize. The course was Nikosi’s, to do with it what he willed.
He covered the black asphalt surface at a steady pace, unconcerned about the morning sun beating at his back, focused only on the victory ahead. He was indeed art in motion as he propelled himself along the 3.1 miles course with convincing ease.
The buzz and excitement of this Saturday morning heightened as Nikosi approached the tape, clearly setting a new course record time. Cameras flashed, video tapes rolled and spectators, colleagues and friends celebrated his crossing of the finish line.
Even the awed Noel Nero was moved to comment, “That man Nikosi had a great run, by the time we reach the turn around point he was all alone in front just moving…”
The one name on-lookers mouthed that morning was “Nikosi” and we await his next event as the potential of this young, spectacular athlete unfolds.
